Culpeper County at 40 mph (windshield pics from rte. 663)

Even if it's really next Saturday, today felt like the first day of autumn, especially driving along Carrico Mills Rd. in the dawn hour. When traveling alone with a digital camera I often waste battery life by taking pictures through the windshield just so I'll remember the vista on a particular curve in the road. When I did this along the Icefields Parkway in Jasper, Alberta it produced stunning shots. In Culpeper County this is not the case, (too many reflections) but I have been admiring that particular hill for at least the last five years on my countless drives down this little road that leads to official state secrets (see below).
This is the commercial greenhouse at the intersection of the road with VA-3, just west of the Orange County line.
Coming into Brandy Station on 663.The building on the right in the background next to the railroad gate for years had a huge window covering poster of Osama Bin Laden with the headline "Wanted For Mass Murder in NYC". Today was the day I'd finally photograph it, but they took it down. I guess they've heeded the administration's words that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism now.
Speaking of the central front, just off 663 on Confederate Ave (named to honor all Kevin's cronies at Nova Town hall) is what the sign says is the US Army Training Center, Warrenton, VA. The only problem is that it's nowhere near Warrenton. The site has a huge guardhouse blocking the entrance, along with hundreds of yards of fencing with keep out signs everywhere. I assume these big white balls serve some purpose in espionage and data interception, but it certainly doesn't look like your typical training center. If you use Google Earth to look at this quadrant the whole site has been fuzzed out and made invisible, so it must be of some importance. Also, it is only a few miles from Poney Mountain where for decades the Federal Reserve kept its shadow self in a hollowed out mountain, since closed down.

  1. That top photo is similar to the view that my ass had when it cracked Ryan's windshield when we were on the way back from the store to buy crepe paper the day of your wedding. Sorry Ryan!
