Happy Birthday Oldtimer (a few hours early)

You sir are the stuff of legend. None other whom with I've traversed America ever peed in a Mcdonalds cup while a Buick rolled down the warehouse lined streets of old Des Moines on a Saturday night in may of prom night corn fed girls and spaghetti buffets.
You are missed by us east coast types who once walked the west at your side on coyote dusks, and strolled the eastern grime in popawheelie hours of laundromat imaginings, and all the snickers powered mountain trips and ten dollar tips in the 3rd street diner and "come one come all to the family reunions". And lest we forget, the jar of chili con queso that is suspended yet in hiker's limbo perhaps floating above Grandfather mtn. where we'd sleep in the car until Boone awoke. "I hear you're building your little house deep in the desert. You're living for nothing now. I hope you're keeping some kind of record"---Leonard Cohen

  1. Ah yes, I recall the old bat-stomping days. What a fine wine they made, no? And still, so few folks even know of it . . .

Talk about some old pics. I wasn't feeling like i'd aged all that much over the years, until I looked at these. THANKS tom. :-)

As I was just talking to kev on the phone, I was also occupying myself with pulling extra-long grey hairs from my arm (only when he was telling dull hair-cut stories, though . . . ). I swear those just grew there today!

Thank you tom for the kind words, and I miss all y'all east coasters, too. Come west, young friends . . . go west.

  2. was that black and white at pony pasture on the James River? 1995 seems like it couldn't be anywhere else.

Nice words, Tom. Always nice words.

    Happy birthday Ryan.

  3. The black and white is from a day trip Ryan and I made to Harpers Ferry where years later I'd be working in full uniform.

  4. We used the complimentary medicine cup to pour ourselves a first shot. The cherry flavor wasn’t that bad, and we laughed and toasted our little plastic cups together. After several gulps the fun kind of left, and we were drinking slower, and occasional gags were par for the course. It was our duty as psychonauts though to down the entire bottle and enjoy the supposedly amazing effects.

  5. um, hopefully that didn't happen at Harpers Ferry. . .though, judging from the look in Ryan's eyes. . .

  9. Oh my goodness, Happy Birthday Ryan! I was thinking about you and your upcoming birthday last month but with Zora's arrival I forgot to tell ya. I love you man!

  10. What's all this "Zora's arrival" and such? If your baby's been born then happy birthday to Zora and that's good to know! Congratulations! That is if Zora's been born. But if she's not been born than I'll withold my congratulations until you tell that she's been born. . .

  12. Sorry Kev! I've been meaning to post an official "Zora's here!" post but I've only uploaded one photo and wanted to get some more on the computer first. And I realized just now that I don't have your e-mail! I assumed your were in my address book when I batched the e-mail out. She is indeed here, I've got the baby to prove it! She is happy and healthy and greedy for milk. I have some more photos too, they are forthcoming. I can't make a site like Tom, though I wish I could. Our computer takes a frustratingly long time to post a single photo. So I'll be posting a photo here and there on "the D.L."

  13. Well. CONGRATULATIONS! We need to connect up next time I'm in Richmond. I want to see her! That's great. I'll stay tuned for details.
